What is Young Life's Beyond Malibu? 

Young Life's Beyond Malibu has been changing lives through wilderness adventure ministry since 1970. Every summer, high school students, college students, and adults of all ages experience real adventure in the breathtaking mountains and picturesque inlets of British Columbia. Campers experience backpacking, sea kayaking and even basecamp adventures for kids with special needs. These unique wilderness experiences provide the Young Life mission with resources designed to foster growth in Jesus Christ.

As the Area Director for Snoqualmie Valley, I sent a number of trips to Beyond Malibu over the years. Time and time again, kids returned having accomplished something bigger than they ever thought possible of themselves. It changed them all in so many ways!

Why is Michelle passionate about Beyond?

In 1993 I was invited to a Young Life Club where I heard the gospel for the first time. I had just graduated and was about to turn 18 when I was given the opportunity to attend Beyond Malibu. Needless to say, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. The trip was difficult to say the least, but it was exactly what I needed. I learned who God says I am and to trust Him completely. Our trip had our fair share of challenges but mostly successes. On our 4th night, snuggled in a sleeping bag around 5,000 feet, not a city light within many miles, I got to watch a meteor shower! We oooh'd and aahh'd at the wonder of it all. The next day I was given a letter written by my family. It left me speechless as tears ran down my face. God's presence in my life was clear and apparent to me. This experience completely changed my desire to not just live in this world, but to change it for him.

What does Michelle need to make this work?

Beyond has been going strong for over 50 years and we are confident it will continue for another 50. Unfortunately, having the border closed for two summers presented a number of challenges. During the coming year I will be working hard to establish staffing, increase trip enrollment, and getting all of Beyond's systems running effectively. The need for me in this role is super clear, but the funding will be a challenge. Beyond has been able to make it due to good financial stewardship and donations. However, in order to start up with a strong staffing team, we need your help. As part of helping Beyond Malibu, I have committed to fundraising for my position. Your gift will be critical as I work to increase backpacking trips that serve adults and student across the country.
